Fantastic Beasts

So I just saw Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. First impressions:

  • I thought it wasn’t bad but somehow…I think I expected more. I don’t know why I expected better after Cursed Child, but… It wasn’t a letdown in the same type of way CC was, though, it just…I’m not really sure what the “more” I was expecting is. Maybe I thought it would be more dynamic? Maybe I thought the worldbuilding would be better/more exciting? IDK.

  • The worldbuilding wasn’t terrible or anything, though. The beasts themselves were pretty cool. Especially the small, funny ones. The worldbuilding surrounding the American wizarding community, however, was pretty meh. I mean, I know that wasn’t the focus of the movie or anything but seriously it was kinda…odd at times.

  • I loved Newt though? I don’t care if he’s a “Hufflepuff stereotype.” Hufflepuff stereotypes FTW, man. He’s just the sweetest thing <3 (Actually, I generally liked the four main characters, with Jacob probably being my second fave after Newt.)

  • On a strictly fandom note: I’m a little disappointed at the lack of shipping material. (I’m a really hard sell on het, ok?)

  • But the lack of the Compulsory Heterosexual Kiss at the end was surprising. Maybe because they’re planning to bring this cast back for the future movies. (Are they?)

  • Depp as Grindelwald still annoys me.

  • Back to fandom: the shipping preferences (granted, which might still evolve/change as more people see the movie) are...not unexpected for fandom but...somehow still kinda unexpected lol. I could have predicted a sizable following for Graves/Credence (especially after finding out that Credence is in fact meant to be an adult not a teenager as I thought while watching the movie), but I didn't think it would be the most popular. Also Newt/Credence is surprising? Newt/Tina is predictable, of course - your standard favored canon het ship. I really did think we'd get more Newt/Jacob? I know it requires working around canon love interests and the aesthetics aren't quite there - I guess? - but still. They'd be cute...

  • I wasn’t expecting Credence to be a very popular character to begin with? Like I felt sorry for him but he was mostly kind of a non-entity, tbh. I might get more into him if/when I re-watch. The fact that I thought he was like no older than 16 didn’t help. (Although I don’t know if him being an adult makes it better or worse..I think it definitely signals that he’s even MORE messed up than I originally thought.)

Wizarding schools - new "canon" - thoughts

As always, new Pottormore "reveals" cause a lot of talk.

The current controversy seems to be "is JKR just careless/really bad at math OR is this deliberate worldbuilding that has XYZ ramifications." Honestly, I think JKR is just that bad at math/is kind of careless about everything HP these days. But then again, I'm not a huge fan of JKR.

There's been this idea going around that the 11 schools are meant to be the Ivy League of the wizarding world and that they are somehow prestigious and whatnot.

But how? If a school is "prestigious/exclusionary" it must be selective about its students. But on what grounds?

Ways to be exclusionary:

  • Heritage - only people who have a certain pedigree in their family line or whose parents have gone to the school.

  • Money - steep tuition costs that only allow for really well-off families to send their children there.

  • Entrance Exams/Pre-school education - necessitates that children have a certain amount of education before entering school (and typically must prove this in an exam).

  • Raw magical talent/ability - there is a magical way to determine the "specialness" of children with magical abilities and only those who have the most potential are selected.

Now, looking at Hogwarts we can throw out 1 and 3, because both these necessitate the exclusion of muggleborn students and we know that mugglebornds attend Hogwarts. Number two also seems unlikely because how otherwise were the Weasleys, who are pretty obviously not rich, able to afford to send that many kids to Hogwarts, especially in a row/simultaneously? Which leaves us with the last option. But then how do we explain people like Crabbe and Goyle? Even accounting for the bias in Harry's POV, it just doesn't seem like they would have made the cut into a international-level prestigious type school.

The one thing I suppose could make sense is if this is a combination of factors, like you have to have one of three: either you're rich, you're a heritage student OR you're really talent. But I feel like that's a very-very broad range there since just about every (British) person with a magical parents would likely qualify under heritage. And "elite" schools wouldn't want that. They'd want to be very restrictive to either wealth or talent or maybe both. But that doesn't seem to be the case Hogwarts either...

HP canon question

Was it ever explained in canon why when they were moving Harry from Little Whinging to the safe house it needed to be...well the way they did it? Why not just Apparate him (side-along) or use a portkey? That seems a lot more sensible to me unless there was an explanation given? Does anyone remember or have the book on hand?

DE War losses/victories ??

Here's what I never understood. How is it that the DEs were able to take control of the Ministry (and Aurors) in under 2 years during the Second War, effectively winning the war, with the exception of a very strong guerrilla resistance in the face of the Order/DA/Harry and co., but they were not able to do the same during the First War, which dragged on for about a decade, but at least five years if we assume that it didn't really get going until the mid-70s? It seems to me that the DEs would have been much stronger the first time around and would have had a lot more things going for them: a more stable-minded leader, more resources, more people willing to join (not having been exposed to the disaster of the a civil war yet), more time to prepare (both politically and otherwise). Sure, the Ministry was in denial for about a year after Voldemort's return and there was a lot of misinformation going around, but even then there is a gap of a year before the Ministry was taken and after it was clear that Voldemort was back and a war was inevitable. A year in which the Ministry/Aurors would have been actively working against DE threats and infiltrations. On the other hand, the DEs were likely to be markedly weaker and under-resourced the second time around.

So what changed? Why was the government take over so comparatively easy the second time around? Did they just not try for a coup the first time? But why in the world not? I don't remember canon giving a coherent explanation to this, but I won't discount that I'm forgetting things. (It's been a while.)

Any theories?

HP aghhh

I've never liked this thing JKR (and HP fandom) does, where he adds stuff to canon in interviews and Pottermore and Twitter (etc) and fandom accepts it as canon. I've recently realized that my reason for this dislike is two-fold:

1) On purely ideological grounds. I'm a canon purist. If it's not in the text, it's not actually canon. (Although I will often incorporate some of these things in my personal understanding of canon.) It's also frustrating to have to follow what is now canon and what isn't if you're not obsessed with JKR or the series to the point of constantly searching out new information. It's a closed canon, let it be closed for goodness sake.

2) On a more person note: it messes with fandom things + I just don't trust JRK with characters or aspects of the universe that I DO like. I think this comes from my own interaction with the books and the reason I'm in fandom. The story was fun, I do like some of the characters and fine others interesting. But the reason I'm in fandom is for the universe. The civil wars and politics, the Houses, the ability to play around with magical theory and culture. I'm in HP fandom to fill up the gaps, sometimes with more well-known characters sometimes with name-only characters. I guess the reason I like the background characters so much is because I can build up characters I like, correct some of JKRs black-and-white morality, plus engage in worldbuilding. I dislike Harry, I'm neutral-positive on Hermione, and I identify with Ron. I dislike Sirius, don't care about Tonks, Minerva and Dumbledore, like Remus. Let's not talk about Snape. That's not a very good track record for being into a fandom for the characters. But even when I do like a certain reading of a character which has been settled, even through my own interpretations or through fanon, I'm afraid JKR will throw something out there that will turn everything tipsy-turvy. I don't like how that living-on-the-edge feeling feels. And I don't trust JKR to actually add information that will actual meaningful complexity or depth to her minor characters, especially the "darker" ones. So that doesn't help.

This rant was brought to you by the "Draco backstory" thingie Rowling released on Pottermore. From what I understand, nothing too new has been revealed (other than how Astoria and Draco decided to raise Scorpius, which while not unpredictable always makes me go argh, you're making my Ides of March potentially OOC, stop it!) but I'm still going to ignore it for the most part. If she cared that much, she would have written it in the books.

Random HP thoughts that's been bugging me...

Am I the only one that finds it kinda...strange...that Harry and Ginny's kids were all named after people who were important to Harry? And even if we say that Ginny didn't want to name her daughter after someone (like Percy named Molly) and Luna was Ginny's friend as much as Harry's but... what about the boys? That's what bugs me. Their first born is named after Harry's Father and Godfather. Their second second, after Harry's mentor and...whatever Harry considered Snape to be. I'm sure Ginny was fond enough of Dumbledore but he wasn't a mentor to her like he was to Harry and I doubt she cared much for Snape no matter his role in the war. Regardless, why wasn't either of their sons named after Ginny's brother, Fred? I mean, the two obviously had a thing for naming their kids after people, since even Lily has Luna's name for a middle name. Do I sense some... balance of power issues going on in that

Anyone remember this sketch?

Well, I have now colored it. No Slytherin badges this time and um, I think I should put a disclaimer here, that I don't think my art skills are good for anything but I do like to pretend sometimes :)

Dizzying Fall Upwards (Harry Potter fanvid. First War.)

This is a HP fanvid I made focused on the DEs and the First War. The vid was made for a Russian contest/team game so, sadly, all the quotes are in Russian and there are some from Russian movies than have not been translated so I can't make an English version. I've translated them under a cut for those who'd still like to watch and I htink the vid can still be watched w/o understanding the text... Anyways...

Title: Dizzying Fall Upwards

Fandom: Harry Potter

Timeframe: First Wizarding War

Genre: drama, action, (a bit of) romance

Characters/Parings: Lucius/Narcissa, Bellatrix/Rodolphus, Tom Riddle (Voldemort), Evan Rosier, Avery, Other DEs

Summary: Peaceful life is interrupted and shattered by a civil war...

FWW comm? Death Eater vid? What?

I’ve been toying with the idea of an HP comm. focused on the First Wizarding War. This is probably brought on by the fact that I’m currently struggling to put together a FWW Death Eater focused vid.* Also, I’m selfish and want a comm featuring my fav time period in the HP fandom. It would also be really could if the comm got enough traffic to where we could run a prompt fest or an exchange (haha I wish)…

*Side Note: On Diary.ru there a team based game featuring the FWW. Order v Death Eaters. I’m, naturally, on the DE team. We’ve got fic writers and translators and artists and I’m the residing vidder. The hardest thing about making this vid, of course, is finding footage. Especially war/battle related things. I mean, I can cut bits and peaces from the HP films themselves but not much. The other kicker is that most movies (that I know of, and that’s not that much admittedly) don’t have their witches/wizards using wands which is very important for the HP world. SO if anyone knows any good movies/shows with usable footage….tell me!
