I really can’t imagine that it was very healthy for Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship for Anakin to have to refer to Obi-Wan as “master,” given his slavery background 🤔
alley_skywalker: (Default)
The Ep IX trailer release made me think of how I should probably spend the rest of the year writing (and reading) all the kylux fanfic I never got to, before it’s ~too late… Like I know there's no such thing as too late in fandom and I've ignored canon for my ships before (see: HP) but it's not the same...

...I think for me the fear is not so much that Hux will die - character death is not a problem, really. (A friend of mine and I have a joke that I’m specifically attracted to “Dead Boyfriend” ships, i.e. where one half dies at some point.) It’s more the fear that they will become legit enemies. Not menacing rivals who are, however, still on the same side of the war, but legit enemies on different sides. That Kylo will have a redemption arch and fight against Hux ideologically. Kind of how the ship lost a lot of people after TLJ because they felt the ship had crossed a line where they couldn’t imagine an actual emotional connection anymore. (I didn’t have this issue with TLJ but I also didn’t think anything in the ship changed fundamentally) So character death isn’t my fear. I’m prepared for that. But “yea clearly I can’t twist things enough to pretend they actually secretly care about each other even in a weird twisted way” is something that could very well happen.
alley_skywalker: (Default)

All the freaking out in Kylux fandom about whether the ship is still “ok” or not is just frankly ??? to me. What…exactly changed? That we saw Kylo and Hux’s dislike for each other have a physical manifestation? Come on, guys. It’s not abuse when two people (who aren’t particularly good people, either, which lbr, we knew already) who have a negative relationship with each other/dislike each other get into a fight.

It’s not abuse when there’s no reasonable expectation of trust between the parties or an inherent power imbalance with a social expectation of caretaking (mainly adult and child). Hux isn’t a helpless child - he’s a sharp and trained military commander He can hold his own against Kylo as much as any other non-Force sensitive and Force-sensitive and non-Force sensitives have gone to battle with each other often.

The first time Kylo chokes Hux is more a physical manifestation of a power struggle. Like any fight/battle. The second episode - the wall thing – is a bit more iffy in that Kylo has social power re/; being the Supreme Leader…but…honestly? His position at that point was NOT stable. If Hux had wanted an insta-coup I bet he could have had it. At any rate, the army is conditioned to obey him first - Hux isn’t powerless, but he has chosen to, at least for that time, submit to Kylo. (Perhaps because they’re in the middle of an f-ing crisis…)

I wonder if 2 years of fanon and AUs has made the fandom collectively lose some perspective, but we KNEW after TFA that Hux and Kylo had an axe to grind with each other and we KNEW that Kylo was not above hurting people/using the Force for intimidation. Essentially, nothing has changed. The core of enemies-to-lovers is that they start out as ENEMIES. Enemies fight and hurt each other. Come on. Not every inappropriate/shitty use of force on another is abuse. All this means is that the development  of their relationship toward friendship/romance may need to be shifted to after TLJ as opposed to directly post-TFA. “They’re not romantic anymore” When were they EVER romantic in canon?  If you thought Kylix was fine after TFA, I really don’t get what the problem is now.

So, I could be misremembering but…during the last battle, Kylo gives orders, but they’re carried out only after Hux gives the same ones. And when Kylo orders fire on Luke and Hux doesn’t echo him, Kylo basically has to repeat himself before anything happens. Clearly, everyone’s waiting on Hux.

And I am so here for Hux having the military’s loyalty more than Kylo and the power dynamics/struggle this could result in.

ETA: since then confirmed that I remembered correctly :D

Kylux AU

The year is 1759.

General Hux is a Prussian officer serving at the Russian court, safe in the favor of the Imperial Grand Duke (whom he doesn’t really like but tolerates for political reasons). Veniamin Ivanovich Solovyev is a young Russian nobleman who often poses as an Englishman by the name of Lord Kyle Ren. He dislikes everything Russian and despises his parents’ intense patriotism.

Hux wants power and success; Venya wants attention and recognition (and independence from the shadow of his parents). The war is not helping things. And when the Grand Duke invites Venya to join him at Oranienbaum for an inner-circle retreat, the wayward aristocrat and uptight Prussian officer suddenly find themselves in excruciating proximity of each other for a far greater period of time than would otherwise be possible…

Saw it today! Overall, it was fun. Definitely more action-y and dynamic than TFA. IDK if I liked it MORE than TFA necessarily - on some levels yes, one some…ehhh. (Though, I do think my INITIAL reaction to TFA was more disappointed, but that might be because I was expecting more, too. I think I keep going in expecting ROTS-level awe and I definitely need to make my peace with the fact that that’s just not happening again lol.

  • As I mentioned, the action was really fun! It was a true fantasy-war movie.

  • The actors did a really good job. The sets/scenery were impressive.

  • Maybe a LITTLE too heavy-handed on the sentimental idealism but w/e. It’s SW.

  • Jyn and Cassian’s relationship was very sweet. It honest-to-God helped that they did not force a romance on us. They could be READ romantically, sure, and I think that was the intention but I really liked how their last moment was them hugging, not kissing. (YMMV of course, but I liked this. I love shipping in fandom, but I’m kinda tired of the Compulsory Heterosexual Romance in canons.)

  • …I was really not prepared for a franchise like SW to kill ALL of it’s main protagonists lol.

  • On a fandom note: YMMV on how much shipping material there is. I think, overall, there’s a decent enough amount depending on your tastes. For me, though, the only thing I think I came away shipping more of less is Cassian/Bodhi. (I would totally ship Cassian/Jyn if I wasn’t such a hard sell on het, though.)4

I don’t stan for Kylo, but I think he can potentially make an interesting character. I also think comparisons/contrasts between him and Anakin can be interesting and will potentially be even more so as the next two movies come out.

What I hate is when people hate on, diminish, or dismiss Anakin for the purposes of defending Kylo. (”Kylo was manipulated!” So was Anakin. “From a young age!” So was Anakin. ‘The adults in his life weren’t supportive enough!” And the Jedi were sooooo supportive. (And this is a hill I’ll die on, but Obi-Wan was NOT supportive and Anakin DIDN’T think he could trust him.) “Kylo had choices made for him his entire life!” So did Anakin. The point is - if you wanna compare the two, do so in good faith. You don’t gain anything by trashing Anakin in Kylo’s “defense.”
alley_skywalker: (Default)

Hux cares a lot about his men. He’s not sentimental about it or anything. Like he has no qualms about sending people out into battle or dolling out punishments for breaking rules, and the needs of the mission always outweigh everything else. But he likes to think that he is reasonable when he’s deciding something case-by-case, he doesn’t really have favorites, and he’s always trying to make sure his men are well provided for. He tries to shield them from Kylo’s temper tantrums (Snook doesn’t take an active interest in the day-to-day things most of the time) and make sure their accommodations and equipment are up to standard. He won’t leave people behind or sacrifice excessive numbers of soldiers unless absolutely necessary. He will always take at least partial responsibility for mistakes made by those under his command (even if he reprimands/sanctions the person who made the mistake later personally) and he works just as hard as any of his officers.

All of this leads to Hux having an overall good reputation in the army. He’s often feared but rarely despised. (And Kylo secretly admires this about him.)
alley_skywalker: (Default)
So, at the end of TFA, Hux has to go find Kylo. And for a while he can’t. At first, he’s just really annoyed because the planet is about to destruct and they have to go and he’ll be in so much shit if he fails in bringing Kylo in… And then he remembers Kylo running off after the infiltrators and it’s getting really close to when they have to leave and Kylo is just no to be found. And suddenly he’s fucking scared. Not because of what Snoke might do or whatever, but that Kylo might be dead or will be dead if he’s out there and they don’t bring him in and he’s left to destruct with the planet… And Hux hates this, but that idiot boy just does something to him and he kind of just wants… Well he certainly doesn’t want him to die. And then he finds Kylo in the snow, bleeding profusely. He’s unconscious and he looks both so miserable and so peaceful. And it’s frustrating and terrifying and Hux really doesn’t know what to do with all these feelings. So he drags Kylo back to the ship, leaves him with the medics and rushes off to ensure that they’re all set for evac. Then, after they’re safely away, he’s making rounds and passes by the med wing and his heart skips a beat when he thinks of Kylo. So he goes and asks how he is and finds out that he’s pretty badly hurt but he’ll live. And Hux is so relieved. But then, a few days later, when Kylo comes strolling around like nothing happened and like he didn’t just almost get himself killed and but how dare he make Hux feel things. And then he’s got this smug look on his face and asks, “did you worry about me?” and Hux makes some sarcastic and rude reply because he’s never letting this loser see what an effect he has on Hux. And Kylo watches Hux skulk away and realizes that he’s a little sad that the general didn’t worry about him at all, because, deep inside, he kind of wishes he had. One day, I might actually write this fic…

I've been out of Star Wars fandom for a while, but I still have strong feelings about Anakin (and Obi-Wan and the SW, especially the prequels, in general). Little 14-15 year old me fought desperately to argue Anakin's case against people often twice her age. I didn't have nearly as much vocabulary and world-knowledge and understanding of social justice issues and psychology, etc, as I do know. And, not to brag, but I think I still stood my ground fairly well. I think...I think I'm a little less categorical on some things now than I was then, although, overall, my opinions of the characters haven't changed much. But I am willing to give, say Obi-Wan, a little more leeway. Often, I think he just didn't know any better.

But anyway. Sometimes, I come across amazing Anakin-focused meta posts like this one and wonder where these people were back then. And also realize that I had part of that analysis figured out even then, but didn't quite have the experience and knowledge to put it all together in such a coherent way.

It also reminds me of why I love(d) (and empathized with and was fascinated by) Anakin so much and why, despite constant attacks on the prequels by "true hardcore fans," Eps I-III meant so much to me.

Umm...I'm in my hater mood today I actually submitted a membership request to a Obi-Wan-haters community here on LiveJournal and am impatiently waiting to (hopefully) be accepted! Its so hard to find those who are tired of ll the Anakin hating and those who hate Obi-Wan and think he was a real princk...
Well since I'm in such a hostile mood today I just had to give of some reasons for WHY I hate the little prissy.

WARING: the following rant is NOT for Obi-Wan fans.

Oh gosh...there are so many reasons that I hate him for. Or maybe its only a few complex reasons I don't know. Well for one he is just too "Jedi." Especially how some authors like Stover make him out to be so "perfect." Now he may have been a perfect Jedi but far from a perfect person.

1. He's just...so cold. He could never let Anakin in no matter how much Anakin loved him and tried to be his friend. Its better in ROTS but at the first sign of danger Obi-Wan blaes and hides behind the Code. Yes, I'm talking about Mustafar here as well as anything else. This brings me to my next point...

2. Heartless and well...does the guy even know the meanings of words like loyalty and friendship? I understand why Anakin never trusted Obi-Wan with his darkest secrets like his marriage -- he was too afraid Obi-Wan would rat him out to the council...which he probably would do.* When he went to Mustafar he didn't even try to find out WHY Anakin turned. So yes Anakin screwed up, screwed up big time, but hello! This is, supposedly, you're best friend we're talking about. If you really CARE about him then why not TRY to do something instead of provoking him with accusations and the starting a fight. (Obi-Wan was the one to ignite his 'saber against.) Then he left Anakin to burn. That's what I call heartless. He could have at least finished the job. I think a quick death is a much more preferable fate then burning alive.
Obi-Wan’s the guy who knows everything about duty but doesn’t know the first thing about loyalty. And I just can’t respect that. .

*3. Suck up. Seriously! When the council says "jump" Obi-Wan jumps! What's up with that?

4. Hypocrite. "Only Sith deal in absolutes" that's what he tells Anakin after ANakin says "if you're not with me you're my enemy." Well isn't Obi-Wan doing the same thing? Fighting Anakin because Anakin isn't on HIS side. Many wold say its because Anakin was on the 'evil" side but since when are good and evil NOT a POV? Alos, aren't Jedi suppose to be oh so forgiving, compassionate, etc? Well leaving Anakin to burn alive wasn't exactly compassionate!

5. Liar. That speech to Luke about a “certain point of view” was such BS. He totally lied to Luke about his father leaving the boy so unprepared for the awful truth when it DID come out. Also “You were my brother, Anakin, I loved you!” Why do I have SUCH a hard time believing that? Now even saying that it’s at least partially true…still! If you loved him so much, Obi-Wan, then WHY didn’t you ever SHOW it?

6. his behavior in TPM was appalling! He was selfish, immature, and inconsiderate. I mean seriously, he was jealous of a nine year old child! Another thing is that he told Qui-Gon that Anakin was dangerous and etc, ect, ect, right in front of the boy! (If you watch the scene on the landing platform right before they go back to Naboo, you’ll notice that Anakin heard it all). He’s not exactly making the kid feel any more welcome,

7. The line “Dreams pass in time” seriously bugs me. It’s just so cold and…agh! I mean Anakin’s looking for comfort. Understanding, and sympathy. Not another dogmatic Jedi platitude!

Well today was rather boring. I have history homework which always sucks... The good part if that I got over 2000 words in tonight for my NaNOWriMo project. I'm also half way done with an update for a fic of mine called Facades. It's one of those AU/Parody types... SW goes to HS! Lol.

Hmm..interesting stuff.. Walpapers! I'll just post links here for kicks and gigles.

Title: Something Special
Author: Alley_Skywalker
Paring: Obi/Ani
Raiting: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own the boys, sadly. George Lucas does so go bug him.
Summary: Obi-Wan doesn't know what it is about Anakin. But it's something. Something special.
Notes: Four words, my friends: short, sweet, painless, pointless. Comments, as always, are loved!

There’s something in the way he smiles. There’s something in the way he laughs. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is but it’s something. Something special.

There’s something in the way his eyes sparkle when he’s flying full speed through the crowded space lanes of Coruscant. There’s something in the way his eyes are so captivating when their eyes meet. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is but it’s something. Something special.

There’s something about the way he says, “No one will ever hurt you. I promise.”  There’s something about the way his voice is so calming and the way it sends shivers up one’s spine. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is but it’s something. Something special.

There is something about the way it feels when their hands brush past each other carelessly. There’s something about the way the shortest embrace in the name of friendship can be the most desired thing. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is but it’s something. Something special.

There’s something about the way his body is so perfect, especially when he’s doing katas. There’s something about the way his hair looks so soft in the dying sunlight. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is but it’s something. Something Special.

There’s something in the way he feels about Anakin. Obi-Wan doesn’t know what it is. But it just might be love.
